I like to keep up-to-date and current by reading and learning new ideas as the fitness industry continues to evolve and new research and ideas are developed. So, then what would you say if I found a book on Amazon, that was written in 1879 and is still relevant today.… Would you believe me? How To Get Strong and How To Stay So, by William Blaikie was written in 1879 – that’s a year before the outbreak of the first Boer War! This is the opening: Similarities to any fitness book published today can be drawn where “postural analysis” and the need to perform “functional training” to improve and coordinate gross motor movements, through the segmental stabilisers of the abdomen and spine exist. Over 130 years ago, William Blaikie was advocating the advantages of getting strong, fit and healthy - and not just men, but women as well! Blakie champions the same balanced resistance compound exercises that personal trainers promote today and even criticises those that skip leg day in favour of developing only their upper bodies! The names of the exercises may be different to today, but he describes the benefit of squatting, doing resistance push and pull movements with dumbbells; and also running on the balls of the feet in the same “new and improved ” method that relatively recent research has uncovered and which minimalist shoe companies such as Vibram have developed, by producing minimalist shoes to maximise this benefit. Information and the resources for training and getting yourself in shape have therefore been around for an eon. The plight of the physical state of humankind that Blaikie describes in 1879 is just as relevant today. It seems that this is more so nowadays, even more than in 1879 as there is an almost infinite amount of fitness resources available on any media you choose to select. However, now as then, a majority percentage of the population don’t want to dedicate the time and commitment required to achieve a functional, healthy body and physique. How does this impact your role as a Personal Trainer?….. The information is out there for all to find out if they want… I think the key to success is that once you achieve your PT certification and become a PT, its about really delving deep into what has motivated your client into seeking your services and developing powerful outcome and process goals with them, so that they also understand the benefits of the workouts. (see Lesson 1 of the EPTI PT Supremacy course in the EPTI Member’s area) Getting the client to come to you is only half the battle. To maintain a steady income you need them to keep on returning to use your services and to refer you to their network. There’s only one way to achieve that… RESULTS. EPTI have tried and tested systems in place to achieve results with clients that are available to all Advanced PT Diploma graduates. They are available in the EPTI Member’s area, where we […]
