Savor the Flavor of the Holidays With These Gingerbread Bites

The following post was originally featured on Running to the Kitchen and written by Gina Matsoukas, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Fitness.

I used to make a lot of balls/bites/snacks rolled into circular form . . . whatever you want to call them. My favorite, however, is ballz.

I would pop them throughout the day whenever I was (ironically) too busy cooking, styling, photographing other food to eat, before a workout, after a workout, while making dinner and starving, before bed as dessert, seriously . . . all the time.

And then I just randomly stopped for no particular reason.

But, I missed my balls.

So earlier this Fall I made pumpkin spice chocolate chip bites which seemed to be a big hit (and definitely were in my house as about five batches were made) and now, we're doing gingerbread chocolate chip bites.

If I thought I loved the pumpkin ones, these are even better.

Gingery, spicy, chocolaty, chewy, and (relatively) healthy!

Honestly, I'd rather eat these than the loads of red and green food-colored, candy-stuffed cookie concoctions I'm seeing everywhere lately.

Real food for the win.

Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Bites

Ingredients

1 cup oats
1/2 cup pecans
4 medjool dates, pitted
1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1/4 cup crystallized ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves
Pinch of kosher salt
2 1/2 tablespoons molasses
1/3 cup dark chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Combine the oats, pecans, and dates in a food processor, and process until finely chopped.
  2. Add the crystallized ginger, flax, chia seeds, spices, and molasses, and pulse until fully combined and mixture can be "pinched together" and hold its shape.
  3. Transfer mixture to a bowl, and fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Roll the mixture into balls.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Did You Catch a Stomach Bug, or Is It Food Poisoning?

It's that time of year when illness spreads like jam on toast. Have you been hit by a stomach virus? Or maybe it was food poisoning? It's good to know which it is, so you know whether or not you are contagious or if other people shouldn't eat the mystery meat in your fridge.

Stomach Virus Food Poisoning
Cause Passed by a virus that attacks the intestines. You catch it by coming in contact with someone who is infected, or by touching something he or she has touched. This virus can also be passed on through contaminated food or water. You get it by eating contaminated food that contains infectious organisms, bacteria (like E. coli), viruses, or parasites.
Symptoms
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Symptoms appear one to two days after exposure to the virus and usually last for one to two days but can last for up to 10 days.
  • Abdominal pain, that can be quite severe
  • Loss of appetite
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Symptoms can show up within hours of eating contaminated food, but exposure to certain contaminants may not cause symptoms until a few weeks later. Sickness lasts from one to 10 days.
Complications
  • Dehydration (caused by excessive vomiting and diarrhea)
  • Dehydration (caused by excessive vomiting and diarrhea)
  • Exposure to certain types of bacteria may prove fatal to unborn babies.
  • Certain strains of E. coli can cause kidney failure.
Method of diagnosis A doctor will ask about your symptoms or take a stool sample. If they see bacteria, they know it's not a bug. A doctor will ask you questions about food you've eaten and how long you've felt symptoms and will perform tests such as checking your blood and stool. They may also check for parasites.
Treatment
  • Rest
  • Drink fluids to replace the ones you've lost.
  • Gradually begin to eat bland foods such as toast, rice, and potatoes. Avoid dairy products, caffeine, spicy foods, and fatty foods.
  • Replace lost fluids.
  • If symptoms are severe, then your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
Prevention Avoid coming in contact with an infected person or anything he or she has touched. Wash your hands several times a day, especially before you eat and after you use machines at the gym. Don't share personal items like cups, utensils, or towels. Keep your hands, cooking surfaces, and utensils clean. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Throw out food that has been sitting out or foods you're not sure about. Cook foods safely and thoroughly. For more tips, check out this post on preventing food poisoning.

New to the Marketplace? Follow these steps to enroll:

Already have a Marketplace plan? Many people with 2014 coverage will be automatically enrolled in their current plan or a similar plan so they continue to have coverage on January 1. • If you want to change plans but don't need to update your application, click on "My Plans & Programs."

Step 5 to stay covered through the Marketplace: Enroll in a health plan

If you bought a health insurance plan through the Marketplace in 2014, you’ll need to decide whether to renew your current plan (if it’s still offered) or change plans for 2015. To get started, check out the 5 Steps to Staying Covered.

Step 5 to staying covered is to enroll in a health plan for 2015.

5 steps to stay covered

Here are some things to remember as you enroll:

  • For health coverage starting January 1, 2015, you must enroll in a plan by December 15, 2014.
  • If you want to change 2015 plans after December 15, 2014, you can do that any time during Open Enrollment, which continues through February 15, 2015.
  • If you make updates and enroll in a new health plan after December 15, 2014, your coverage won’t start on January 1. Read the notice from your health plan to check when your coverage will start.
  • Contact your plan to confirm your enrollment and be sure to pay your premium.

Complete all 5 Steps to finish enrolling in a health plan, even if you want to stay in the same plan. This is important to get the coverage you want and the most cost savings that you’re eligible for. Take action by December 15, 2014 to make sure you have the right coverage for your needs starting January 1.

If you have questions, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596. TTY users should call 1-855-889-4325. You can also visit Localhelp.HealthCare.gov to find help in your area.

Grow Your Fitness Business With Networking

Networking is the most valuable resource you have at your disposal as a business owner and a fitness professional. By managing your network effectively and getting into a habit of network cultivation, your network should work for you and serve as your primary lead source, connecting you to a stream of new clients. Let’s start by establishing a network that you can use to help grow your business and move forward with. To begin, make a list of everyone you know… this is known as a NETWORK DUMP. Stage 1: List everybody you know, not making any pre-judgement about whether you think that they would make a good client or not. • Start with the contacts in your mobile phone. Gather all the contact Information you have for them and anything else you know about them. If you are missing anything, such as their email or address, make it your business to obtain it. Next, open up your e-mail address book and do the same thing. Now search your Facebook friends and list those that live in close proximity to you. Finally, think about all the people you have a passing contact with and have formed some sort of relationship with, but maybe on not such a regular basis (eg your hairdresser, doctor, dentist etc.) We are aiming to come up with a list of 250 names. Its been documented that everybody knows at least 250 other people. You will begin by introducing your business to this 250 person network. These people in turn will have their own “250” network, so that you can potentially reach 62,500 people who you can go on to introduce our business to and potentially build some sort of business with. Stage 2: Organise your list into A/B/C Categories. • The “A”s: Are the top 10-15% of your 250. They are your clients who really advocate what you do, your close friends and people that really know you. • The “B”s: Are people you would consider as friends and clients that you don’t have such a strong a relationship with. • The “C”s: Are acquaintances. Let’s now take a look at the strategies we use to deal with each category – • “A”s : Ask for Advice! We have found that the best way of obtaining a referral from this group is to sit down over a coffee when they’re not rushed and ask them for advice…. Sure, you can ask them straight out to refer a friend, but basically you’re asking them to do your job for you and we like to be a little more tactile than this. When you ask somebody for advice, you’re basically giving them a pat on the back… you’re telling them that you really value your opinion. That’s such a powerful compliment to pay somebody, as well as a boost to their ego. So, if they are a client that you really enjoy training, you want to tell them that you really enjoy training them and give them […]

4 Foam Roller Exercises to Burn Fat and Reduce Cellulite

Yes, it hurts so good, but there's more to foam rolling than easing post-workout soreness. Technically called self-myofascial release, foam rolling therapy works by alleviating adhesions or “knots” in soft tissue to restore elasticity and muscle motion. By guiding your body back and forth over the roller, you're essentially giving yourself a deep tissue massage. “Foam rolling gives you more circulation, more oxygenated blood,” says Lauren Roxburgh, a personal trainer and expert in foam rolling.
